community dance workshops by kid mentors
In February 2024, Vivistop Honolulu kicked off a brand-new monthly series that quickly became a community favorite: the Monthly Community Dance Workshops — free, all-ages, no-experience-needed sessions led by youth dancers and rising creatives from across Oʻahu.
This wasn’t about perfection or performance. It was about expression, connection, and giving young people a platform to lead and share their love for dance with the wider community.
The Lineup
Each month brought a new dancer, a new style, and a whole new vibe:
February: Hip Hop with Kazu (aka Dr. Sushi)
13-year-old winner of the Dance Awards 2023 (Junior Division), Kazu brought musicality, power, and energy that had the whole room locked in and moving with purpose.March: Hip Hop with Asher (Crossing Rain)
With a smooth, freestyle-forward style, Asher introduced his take on musicality and movement, showing that hip hop can be both grounded and expressive.April: K-Pop with Taylor (Vibe Dance Academy / 24/7 Danceforce)
Taylor brought the polish, precision, and energy of K-pop choreography to Vivistop — helping dancers of all ages channel their inner idols.May: Breaking Basics with Yubin (808 Breakers, Keiki Breaks, MB Crew, H Crew)
Yubin broke it down (literally) with a session on foundational breaking moves, sharing the culture, technique, and storytelling behind the dance.
Why It Matters
These workshops are about more than steps. They're a space for:
Youth leadership — Every workshop is created and taught by a teen or young adult
Creative confidence — Participants are invited to explore movement in a non-judgmental, hype-up-each-other environment
Community connection — Kids, parents, siblings, and even first-timers dance side-by-side
At Vivistop, we believe that creativity takes many forms and dance is one of the most powerful. These monthly workshops continue to prove that when you hand the mic (or the aux cord) to young people, they show up ready to lead, move, and inspire.
